I found that combining sight words with cheers, melodies, and whole brain movements in 16 beats or less makes a huge difference in word retrieval. While developing So Simple, I began to see where the “bumps in the road” were and worked to resolve these issues using skills all my students had: they could move, make noise, sing, and have fun! Noting how easily they remembered the 100+ songs and motions, 20+ dances, and sign language skills they learned through the school year, it was an easy transition to combine these innate abilities with reading and writing to create a lower-anxiety learning environment. Students responded to the music or motion cues I would give them if a word didn’t come immediately to them whether in reading or spelling.

I’m Patty So, a veteran teacher of 33 years with 29 of these years in a Title I first grade ELD classroom.
